“There’s no doubt about it, growth is hard,” said Trevor, reflecting on the success of Millerbernd Manufacturing. “It’s much easier to stay the status quo, and unfortunately, you see a lot of companies who do just that when they reach a certain level and plateau. But for us, we believe if you’re not growing, you’re dying. Because that kind of momentum pushes you to always improve and to scale your business.”
Because of this growth, Millerbernd is continually improving its capabilities and its capacity for its customers. But Trevor also points out that growth is what fuels career paths for employees.
“Momentum creates opportunities,” said Trevor. “Not just for the business in terms of investing in new equipment or new facilities, but for our employees too. Obviously, it creates a need for more employees, but more importantly, it creates stability and a career path for advancement for existing employees.”
This kind of growth has allowed Millerbernd to offer its employees a host of career advancement tools, such as welding schools, leadership training, and internship programs. And over the past year, Millerbernd has grown its team to over 630 strong.
“Of course, the biggest benefactor of momentum is our customers,” said Trevor. “We’ve recently expanded significantly in terms of facilities, employees, and equipment, all of which has expanded our capabilities and our capacity. We can now fill new needs customers were asking for that in the past we couldn’t. That’s positive growth.”
Trevor is quick to point out that growth does have risk, but Millerbernd is acutely in tune with those possible growing pains and is constantly monitoring for any potential disruptions. In those rare instances, they are quick to respond.
“It’s our job to grow in a controlled state…to keep disruptions from happening,” said Trevor. “The positives far outweigh the negatives, and in the rare instance a situation comes up, we react quickly, communicate often, and always stay true to ourselves and our reputation.”
Another way Millerbernd manages momentum and continually delivers for its customers is through metrics, which ensure quality, performance, deadlines, cost, and customer service are being met.
“We’re religious about metrics,” Trevor emphasized. “We’re always making sure our metrics align with what our customers expect. That allows us to manage momentum to our advantage…to not go too fast and to sometimes say no. That’s where our focus comes into play and what makes us a leader in the industries we serve.”
