The Power of Putting People First: Inside Millerbernd's Leadership Philosophy

Millerbernd’s servant leadership approach is more than an organizational hierarchy chart, it’s a mindset that creates a workplace climate that’s supportive, focused, and allows everyone to thrive. 

There’s an energy within Millerbernd, and you can feel it and see it every day. “Leaders bring the weather,” said Eric Stack, President at Millerbernd Manufacturing, when asked this question. “Our philosophy at Millerbernd is to create a workplace climate that allows others to thrive. It’s putting people first and giving everyone the opportunity to participate…to know that they’re making a difference and helping this organization grow.”
 

The empowering others philosophy, also known as servant leadership, stems from an organizational framework found in the Entrepreneurial Operating System, or EOS, a system used by Millerbernd and thousands of other organizations designed to fuel success. Yet, while EOS provides Millerbernd an operational system, servant leadership gives the organization its heart. 
 

“For us, leadership isn’t about creating some sort of hierarchy,” said Eric. “While we have org charts, the true character of servant leadership is rooted in service. By empowering others, we create an environment that supports each of our team members…it builds trust. In other words, we’re not trying to control the outcome or stand in the way, but instead allow our teams to guide the process and create better solutions.” 
 

As a result of servant leadership, Millerbernd’s employees also grow. An empowered environment creates a climate where employees feel safe — where they can contribute, make suggestions, and take ownership without apprehension. With that comes more opportunities for personal growth and advancement. It’s one of the biggest reasons why many employees who start a career at Millerbernd stay there.
 

When it comes to Millerbernd’s customers, the benefits of servant leadership may not always be evident at face value. But according to Eric, the success of Millerbernd and, more importantly, the ongoing and continuous sentiments of satisfied customers are a direct result. 
 

“When we empower our employees, customers get better service and quicker solutions,” said Eric, “and in the process, they build long-term trust with us, and that’s the ultimate compliment.”
