The Best Solutions Demand The Best Welders…Millerbernd Builds Both
At Millerbernd, unwavering focus isn’t a slogan—it’s why we reject ‘good enough’ every single day. Our welding school graduates don’t just meet that standard; they embody it.
With nearly 700 employees spanning across two locations and covering more than 900,000 square feet of manufacturing capacity, few people would consider much about Millerbernd Manufacturing as “small”. That is until they set foot inside the company’s welding classroom taught by long-time employee Matt Peck. Despite having nearly 80 active welders company wide (and growing) there are only four welding stations inside his intimate classroom space.
“When I first started here in 2000 we only had about 75 employees, now we have more than that just welding,” said Matt. “Keeping the class size small is a real advantage for us. What we do here…the products we build require a welding process that is also unique. Being able to provide training that is oftentimes one-on-one is a real advantage for us.”
Millerbernd’s welding academy features two different classes. Welder 1 is geared for anyone, even someone with no welding experience at all; and Welder 2 builds on those basic skills and introduces more complex and unique processes that are required for the products Millerbernd specializes in.
“Welder 1 is where we level-set everyone because our focus demands excellence,” said Renee Regep, Learning and Development Manager for Millerbernd. “One of the things that all of our training does is to turn challenges into the confidence that defines our products and Millerbernd careers.”
While training welders might be commonplace at other manufacturers, few if any can measure up to what Millerbernd offers. That’s because few employ the unique processes required for the products they manufacture, or require the stringent performance and quality specifications that Millerbernd’s DOT approved infrastructures must meet.
“We have people coming from all types of backgrounds and levels of experience,” said Parks. “With our training we expose them to everything so they have the confidence they need on the job. Some might not be able to read an imperial tape measure. Some might not have experience with a plasma cutter. Others may have a lot of welding experience but they’ve never had to weld something that is rotating. What we do here is very unique and it requires a skill set to match and that’s what we give them."
With Millerbernd providing DOT approved lighting and traffic infrastructure solutions to more than 40-states, learning the unique welding process and skills required is only part of the training program.
“We’re not just teaching them how to weld,” said Renee. “We’re also teaching them how to read blueprints, how to improve the process, and above all else, how to do it safely.”
Renee also noted how Millerbernd employees are just more engaged and really look forward to coming to work.
“No two days here are the same,” said Renee. I hear it all the time. We’re always building something different, so there’s always a new challenge and it’s never boring. I think for anyone who works with their hands, that’s a really big deal.”
While teaching welding skills is a big part of the program, both Matt and Renee echoed the same sentiment that at Millerbernd, the learning process is as much about gaining self confidence and building personal success as it is building world-class products.
“Millerbernd is all about growth, both from a company perspective and a personal one,” said Renee. “We want our employees to grow with us…to become more accomplished, to gain more confidence, and to find more success in their career and in life.”
